The Association of Sri lankan Neurologists (ASN) is deeply saddened by the demise of Prof Jun Kimura on 03 March 2022, at the age of 87. He has been an honorary member of ASN since 2015. Prof Kimura is the pioneer in modern Clinical Neurophysiology. He was a world renowned scholar holding professorships in University of Iowa (1977-1998) and Kyoto University (1988-1998) both of which he held simultaneously for a period (1988-1998). He has been professor emeritus to both these universities since 1988.
His contribution to the field of neurology and clinical neurophysiology has been immense, having published 509 original research papers, authoring 11 textbooks and 73 chapters. He authored the classic textbook ‘Electrodiagnosis in Diseases of Nerve and Muscle’.
He served as president for World Federation of Neurology (2002-2005), International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (1990-1993) and many other esteemed national and international academic bodies. He has been a member of editorial board of 12 national journals and 15 international journals.
He was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Muscle & Nerve (1988-1997)
He has been honoured with many accolades among which are lifetime achievement awards (AAEM-1999, International Congress of Neuromuscular Diseases – 2006), WFN Medal for Service to International Neurology (2017) and special lectureships.
He was the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of Annual Academic Session of ASN in 2015. He made a valuable contribution to the sessions as a resource person by delivering plenary lectures and conducting his popular workshop on nerve conduction and electromyography.
He is fondly remembered as a very friendly, humble and humane character with good sense of humour. He is survived by his wife Junko, three sons and grandchildren.
